If you have a
virus on your computer, it is your fault!!!
As reported in the news, TV, and all over, there are several new viruses
attacking computers. We have had many customers reporting viruses on their
machines. If it makes you feel any better, if your computer has been infected by
a computer virus, so have hundreds of thousands of other machines, including
several large banks.
Budget POS has never been infected by a virus. Avoiding virus attacks is
fairly simple.
#1...Install Norton Antivirus 2004 (or equivalent) on every machine.
#2...Make sure that your Virus Definitions are updated once per week.
#3...If your computer is directly attached to the internet, you should add a
Router or Firewall software. If you are using Windows XP, Firewall software is
already installed on your computer. You must activate it. Look at Windows XP
help and search for Firewall. The Firewall software that comes with Windows XP
is fairly elementary, but adequate. We do not necessarily recommend that you go
out and purchase a more potent Firewall Software package. The more potent
packages sometimes use too many resources and slow down your computer. So,
either use a Router (about $50 or so) or activate the Firewall software that
comes with Windows XP.
*** As per some of our previous newsletters, our downloads and emails are
VIRUS FREE. We are very good at it. It is extremely improbable that you received
a virus from us. All of our computers are double protected.
Many viruses that come to your computer contain fake FROM addresses. This is
called spoofing. Here is how it works. Your computer may be virus-free. You have
a friend names John Smith. John Smith's computer is NOT virus-free. John Smith
knows your wife Helen Jones (nothing funny going on between them!). Helen Jones'
email address is on John Smith's computer, which has a virus. The next thing you
know, you get an email from your wife Helen Jones that contains a virus (as
reported by your Antivirus software). You then assume that your wife's computer
has a virus on it. WRONG!!! John Smith's computer has the virus and sends the
virus email to your computer with a fake FROM address. That's how many of the
viruses work now.
You can't tell a book by its cover any more. If your computer reports a virus
and HELEN JONES or *** Make sure that your computer has updated antivirus software on it, and
add a router or firewall software to your server computer.
*** If your computer has slowed down, it is very likely that there are many
spy packages on your computer. Many of the Web Sites that you frequent put a
small program on your computer that checks to see how many times you have gone
to that site. This is very common. Less common is more potent spy software that
actually takes over your computer. For example, every time you type in the word
California (for example), an add will pop up showing you California air fares.
The most serious spy software actually monitors your key strokes and can steal
passwords.
We have found that by running SPYBOT, we have increased the speed of many of
our customer's computers by more than 25 percent.
SPYBOT can be downloaded for free at *** I always like to have a disclaimer just in case. We are experts. We can
repair almost any virus problem, software problem, or hardware problem. Make
sure you have proper backups. Sometimes, when you install new software such as
Antivirus Software or AntiSpy Software, you can make changes to your computer
that will cause problems. So, proceed at your own risk!!!
